Fushimi Inari
encaustic, 44"x44"
September 2013
The painting is named for the eponymous shrine in Kyoto, Japan. The shrine is famous for its nearly 4km-long winding path of orange gates. Fushimi Inari is about the color, the subtle variation therein—some of the gates are older than others—and the rhythm of verticals as the gates march up the hill.
