Obscured by Clouds

encaustic, 90"x24"

Obscured by Clouds evolved from an idle 10x4 ink drawing. A simple set of rules govern where circles can and can't be, and I let the overall shape emerge from there. Scaling to nearly 8 feet across and using encaustic meant I could build in a lot more complexity. Encaustic is one of the few media in which layers aren't measured in microns. There are seven layers of color here, and the thickness of the wax, its inherent hue and luminescence, give this piece true depth.
