SR-71
encaustic and graphite, 30"x40"
March 2015
SR-71 was made for the annual Museum of Northwest Art auction. It had its genesis from the underbelly of an Blackbird aircraft. Contrary to expectations of a smooth exterior, it was covered in plates fastened in sections, which then came together in an apparently haphazard pattern. I kept the piece very light with high translucence, letting the color vary slightly from section to section. The darker dots at the borders of every section were laid in before the main colors, thus forming physical "rivets".
